How Many Passengers Are Flying Right Now?

Representative image showing volume of flights per day worldwide
Ever wonder how many people are flying in an airplane right now, at this very minute?
Depending on source, about 500,000 people are estimated to be up in the air at any given time. If the average length of a flight is two hours, that means six million people fly somewhere everyday. Nearly 0.1% of the entire world’s population. (Okay, that figure may draw some hate mail).
The Guardian put together an incredible web display of aviation, its history, and its future. You have to check it out! http://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2014/aviation-100-years. The interactive page is much cooler than this simple factoid.
